Canadian Grain Pearl Millet Hybrid - 90 (CGPMH - 90)

AERC developed Canadian Grain Pearl Millet Hybrid 90 (CGPMH 90) from the breeding program for its ability to produce high grain yields over a wide range
of growing conditions in south western Ontario.

Pearl millet (Penniseturn glaucum) is the most important millet species among the several small seeded tropical grasses. It is largely grown for grain and fodder purpose under hot, dry conditions on infertile soils of low water holding capacity where other crops generally fail. Pearl millet is the staple cereal for over 100 million people in Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

The ethnic population of North America consumes pearl millet as a health food, as a substitute for rice and pasta, as porridge in salads, flat breads and cakes. It is also used for animal and bird feed. Several studies indicate that, compare to corn,pearl millet is 8-60% higher in crude protein, 40% richer in amino-acids lysine and methonine and 30% richer in threonine. In the USA Poultry industry is the major consumers of pearl millet grain. Pearl millet is a warmer season crop, planted in late spring. The seeds donot germinate in cool,wet soils, so it would be advantageous to delay planting until the soil are warm enough. Pearl millet is generally planted in the same way as small grains, using drills. The plant grows with several tillers and a mass of very fine fibrous roots both laterally and downward into the soil profile. Pearl millet prefers well-drained light sandy to loamy soils.

Until recently, there were no varieties of grain pearl millet available for growing in Canada. Grain pearl millet breeding program was initiated by AERC Inc. in 1994. Several hundred lines of grain pearl millet germplasm were evaluated in Delhi, southwestern Ontario and several hybrids were developed. After three years of testing the first grain hybrids CGPMH 90 was released in 2002.
